Portland-based painter Nicole Williford's Madonna, Madonna pulls from seemingly discordant visual languages—expect traditional portraiture and realist exactitude combined with surprising moments of abstraction and surreality. Drawing from family photographs, Williford's compositions function as a meditative practice for the artist, and follow subjects "from girlhood into matriarchy." The results emphasize all of the monotony, grief, and beauty that occurs in a life.
